Strengthen “the sustainable farm” concept via efficacious conversion of farm wastes into methane

چکیده

With escalating global demand for renewable energy, exploitation of farm wastes (i.e., agriculture straw (ASWs), livestock wastewater (LW) and sewage sludge (SS)) has been considered to attain maximum methane yield (MY) via anaerobic digestion (AD). Results pointed that mixture SS LW as anaerobes’ source with 20 g ASWs/300 mL working volume achieved MY volatile solid (VS) removal efficiency 0.44 (±0.05) L/gVS 51.4 (±4.1)%, respectively. This was mainly because emerging heavy duty bacterial species Syntrophorhabdaceae Synergistaceae) archaeal community (i.e, Methanosarcina Methanoculleus) after 70 days incubation. acquired along boosting enzymatic activity, especially xylanase, cellulase protease up 71.5(±7.9), 179.3(±14.3) 207.2(±16.2) U/100 mL, Furthermore, the digestate contained high concentrations NH4+ (960.1±(76.8) mg/L), phosphorus (126.3±(10.1) mg/L) trace metals, making it a good candidate organic fertilizer.

Sustainable production of dairy farm systems

Sustainability of dairy farm production systems can be measured by the intersection between profitability and environmental stewardship. It is clear that unprofitable farms are destined to go out of business. Similarly, although not as evident, farms that are not efficient in the use of input resources, having higher wastages, and consequently producing more emissions, are likely to be un-susta...

Methane mitigation in ruminants: from microbe to the farm scale.

Decreasing enteric methane (CH4) emissions from ruminants without altering animal production is desirable both as a strategy to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and as a means of improving feed conversion efficiency. The aim of this paper is to provide an update on a selection of proved and potential strategies to mitigate enteric CH4 production by ruminants. Various biotechnologies...

Mitigation of methane emissions from constructed farm wetlands.

Constructed wetlands are increasingly used for water pollution treatment but may also be sources of the greenhouse gas CH(4). The effect of addition of two potential inhibitors of methanogenesis - iron ochre and gypsum - on net CH(4) emissions was investigated in a constructed wetland treating farm runoff in Scotland, UK. CH(4) fluxes from three 15-m(2) wetland plots were measured between Janua...

The sustainable farm families project: changing attitudes to health.

INTRODUCTION Farm health and safety has historically focussed on strategies such as injury prevention, safety audits and fulfilling legislative responsibilities. However, farmer injuries mask deeper health issues including higher rates of cancer, suicides, cardiovascular disease and stress. The relationship between occupational health and safety and farm family health has not been fully investi...

Biofuel Production on Swine Farm Methane and Ammonia Emissions

1984 Methane (CH4) and ammonia (NH3) are emitted to the atmosphere during anaerobic processing of organic matter, and both gases have detrimental environmental eff ects. Methane conversion to biofuel production has been suggested to reduce CH4 emissions from animal manure processing systems. Th e purpose of this research is to evaluate the change in CH4 and NH3 emissions in an animal feeding op...
